About

Hop Queries is, first of all, a monthly newsletter.

I began publishing it in May of 2017 in order to share what I have continued to learn about hops since “For the Love of Hops” went into print in 2012. What I wrote in 2017 remains true today. You can expect a bit of agriculture, a dash of science, an occasional new variety, and information of use primarily to brewers, but occasionally drinkers.

Beginning with Vol. 7, No. 9, dispatches are posted here as well as being delivered as email. Rather than archiving the first 77 issues as individual publications, I have organized the information within to make what’s relevant today easier to find.

For instance, Vol. 1, No. 3 included the most complete list of hops containing the thiol 4-mercapto-4-methyl-2-pentanone (4MMP) available anywhere. It has been updated several times since, and the latest list is the one to use.

Head to the archives to see how they are organized.

As to about me, I’ve been a journalist most of my life. I certainly never expected I would end up writing about beer, now for more than 30 years, longer than I worked at newspapers. These days I describe myself as retired, with the exception of a) blogging a bit at AppellationBeer.com, b) working on a project that has little to do with hops, c) reporting on hops once a month at Brewing Industry Guide, and d) writing Hop Queries.
